Research committee announcement

April 28

Meeting at the same place and time.

March 24
Dear Lathrop House Research Committee:

Thanks for signing up to help on the research committee.

I e-mailed Don Rettig and asked him the following questions:

"Other than the obvious of documenting the Lathrop's involvement in the Underground Railroad, is there anything else that you want from the research committee? Are we researching just the Underground Railroad stuff, or are we interested in all owners and occupants of the house? What will the historical documentation be used for? In the end, what do you want from the research committee?"

Don Rettig answered:

"We will want to know all we can about the house - all owners, occupants, uses of the property, etc. Eventually we will use this information in an interpretive guide for staff and volunteers. The most helpful thing for Metro parks would be verbatim transcriptions of relevant material and the corresponding bibliographic information. While primary documentation is most useful, secondary sources are important too. It would also be nice to get oral histories from some people - Crandall's, Mrs. Vogt, etc."

So, with this in mind, why don't we all put our thinking caps on, make some notes on ideas, and all get together for a brain storming meeting on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. We will meet at the Sylvania Police Department, 6635 Maplewood Avenue (in the building where city council meets).

I was talking to Bob Lathrop and he has this wonderful "blog" where the group can post their research findings and share things with each other as we go. Hopefully Bob will be present at this meeting and can better explain how we can use this "blog".

If you have a problem with this date, and time, let me know. If too many have a problem with the date and time we can change it.

Let me know.

Gaye Gindy
